DORRIS RANCH

GENERAL INFORMATION

Because this is an additional event for our 2005 campaign season and because it is somewhat experimental in nature, I have decided to alter our usual format. This is essentially a “Living History” weekend that we will be sharing with people from other historical time periods. Our Union encampment will be very near the battlefield. It is not as nice and green as the Confederate camp but they are going to have to walk a long ways just to get to battle. The public will pass right by our camps in much the same way as the Confederate camps at Fort Stevens. Thus, we have a new area of the state to recruit and an excellent site to attract the public into our camps both before and after the battles. Let us make use of this opportunity by doing a lot of Living History in camp and interacting with the public. Let us put on a show for them and attract some new recruits.

1. DIRECTIONS … Traveling south on I-5 take exit 194A. That will put you on Highway 126 East. Take the first exit to your right after you get on Hwy 126 E … it will say Springfield. At the bottom of the ramp turn right on to Pioneer Parkway West. Stay on this until the road comes to a T … continue across the Tand you will pull right into Dorris Ranch.

2. DUTY ASSIGNMENTS … There will be “no” Guard Mount or Day Guard at this event. We will also“not” have a Night Guard though each company needs to provide its own fire watch at night. Secure flags and firearms at all times. There will be “no” Color Escort duty but we will need volunteers for aflag detail to raise/lower the National Colors each day at the start of Dress Parade.

3. PARKING & CARS IN CAMP … Reenactor parking will be “on site” with no fees. Please secure yourvehicles after you have unloaded your gear at the Union camp. Signs will direct you to the proper loca- tions. Vehicles will not be allowed in camp from 8:00 AM on September 24th until 4:00 PM on Septem-ber 25th. If there are emergencies please see your Battalion Commander or Event Coordinator Harold Slavik (2nd Virginia).

4 SET UP … You may enter the event site as early as 8:00 AM on Thursday (September 22). Friday (September 23rd ) will be a Living History day with school groups which will last from 9:30 AM until2:30 PM. Historical presentations will consist of stations presenting information about Lewis & Clark, mining, fur trade and Native Americans.

5. DAILY SCHEDULE … The event schedule for the Union Battalion will be provided on site when youarrive.
